In California, Medicaid is called Medi-Cal. It pays for health care for people with limited income and assets, and for many Medicare beneficiaries it also covers the Part B premium, deductibles and coinsurance that Medicare leaves behind. What Medi-Cal can do for a Medicare beneficiary

• Pay your Part B premium. The Medicare Savings Programs (QMB, SLMB and QI) cover the standard Part B premium, which is $202.90 a month in 2026.
• Cover cost sharing. QMB also picks up Medicare deductibles, copays and coinsurance.
• Unlock Extra Help. Qualifying for Medi-Cal automatically qualifies you for the Part D Low Income Subsidy, which sharply reduces prescription costs and waives the Part D late enrollment penalty.
• Open the door to D-SNP plans. Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans combine Medicare and Medi-Cal benefits in one plan, often with extra dental, vision, transportation and over-the-counter allowances.
• Give you a Special Enrollment Period. Dual eligible members can change plans outside the normal Annual Enrollment Period.

Applying for Medi-Cal in San Diego County

Applications for San Diego County residents are handled by the County Health and Human Services Agency and can be submitted online through Covered California or BenefitsCal, by mail, or in person at a Family Resource Center. The paperwork asks for proof of identity, income, residency and, in some cases, assets. Errors and missing documents are the most common reason an application stalls, which is why we sit down with clients and fill it out together.

Renewals matter as much as the application

Medi-Cal has to be renewed every year. Renewal packets are easy to miss and coverage can be terminated for paperwork reasons alone, even when someone still qualifies. If you receive a renewal notice and are not sure what it is asking for, bring it to us before the deadline passes.
